Motorokr Star singing competition

Hi
I know this isn't your average competition since it was actually a singing competition run nationwide by Motorola to find the next motorola singing star for the UK

BUT - a friend of mine entered at a booth they had set up in a shopping centre and has just had an email to say she MAY BE one of the top 100.
She has been asked to travel to london AT HER EXPENSE this saturday for an audition - it says quite clearly that you must pay ALL travel expenses. If you can't attend, they';ll pick someone else.
BUT at such short notice, a train from way up north will be expensive and she has a show that night so would need to get back within hours.
When she entered, the guy at the booth took her details and gave her a free pack of goodies. He said it was a FREE competition for anyone over 18. That was all he said.
The email says anyone chosen must have purchased one of a range of motorola phones between october- December 2008 (which my friend didn't !!)
Is this legal - since no-one at the booth was told this and obviously didn't bother going online to read the small print.
The online rules say you must be free on 21 Jan to go to USA for final if you are chosen as one of the top 10 from your audition film. BUT it didn't say you'd have to go to london and pay for it yourself this weekend to stand a chance of being in the top 10. A lot of the top entries are from teenagers - unless they live in London, can't see many of them being able to afford the trip especially since the email just says "you may be one of our top 100!!)
The competition closed on Dec 31 but it has allowed voting to continue until last weekend so unless they logged the scores on Dec 31, the top 100 won't be right anyway.
Anyone know about competition rules in the UK ??
Also, posting this on mobile phone forum since I figure people entering likely to be members there - hope that's okay.
Thanks !!
Olivia

  • I don't know much abbout the legal angle, I'm afraid, but this sounds fairly grotty to me....

  • Hi,

    It was a nice post.

One common mistake that most singers do in vocal competitions is that they choose the lower key songs just because they are popular. The key is not to fall in this trap. You have to browse the different song catalogs and listen to a lot of CDs, till the time you actually settle upon a song that suits your personality and the range of your vocals.

what has this got to do with the OP, who was asking about the legalities of the promotion, not about what key their friend should sing in???
