Card companys

I work for a greeting card company, and was wondering if they will survive the credit crunch.I had heard that Celebrations has gone and that Clinton cards has closed several stores too.

I asked my boss and he just shrugged it off and said it would be fine. Has anyone heard of any redundancy's from any big suppliers such as Hallmark, Gemma and UK Greetings? As i know this will have a huge knock-on effect to stores.

Im wondering whether or not to move onto another job, what would be the safest thing to do?

Make sure you have accessible savings available! - how long have you been there? (if its more than two years you are entitled to redundancy pay) - so if its a while you are prob best staying just yet - esp if your manager isn't overly worry.
Using my phone to post - apologies in advance for any typos
  • I have been working there for 6 years. I will stay put here for a bit then.

I that greeting cards are relatively immune from a downturn particularly if they have the quality and price right. People are likely to skimp on other expenditure first before greeting cards for loved ones and close friends.
  • I hope that the case, i know of a few people who have been purchasing crad making kits from QVC and Ideal World and making their own. They find it is slightly cheaper and more personal. Some of the prices for cards are ridiculous though!

I suppose there is a risk of home made ones increasing in popularity but it is time consuming and I suspect a bit of a nine day wonder for those who venture there. There is the personal touch but mostly I suspect they are an inferior product.

Tesco have increased their range of "value" cards that sell at 49p-99p.

  • Hi,

I am currently working for Hallmark Cards Plc and can confirm that they have released to the press, 65 redundancies to take place this month.

Myself and my wife are at risk.

Whilst im retired now due to ill health i worked in the greeting card supply business during the recessions of the 1980s and 90s and never had a whiff of redundnacy, and i think its true to say that whilst people will cut back on or cut out gifts they will still buy a card, and usually a better one to compensate being so tight on the gift.
However were i still working in the industry today my concern would be that the multiples asda tesco m&s clintons, and card factory have taken over the industry,in the town where i live 5 of the 6 independant card retailers have closed in the last 2 years.
So my advice would be to look where the company you work for is positioned in the market then decide if they will last, theres still no harm looking round for another job,but theres not too many of them around atm
out of interest can you tell us who you work for?
