McVities Digestives Con

Do any of you buy the double packs of McVities Digestives? My husband is addicted to them and so I always buy the double packs (2 x 500g). However, I recently noticed that they were priced at £1.86 and thought it seemed a bit expensive. I then looked at the price of a single 500g pack and noticed it was 84p, meaning that two single packs would cost £1.68. 9p per pack cheaper! As I was in Asda at the time and this is not my usual shopping place, I thought it must be a mistake and I made a mental note to check next time I was in Sainsbury or Tesco. Guess what - they are both the same!!! I am now wondering if they all take us for fools and price-fix or whether the price will be set by McVities and they think we are all idiots.

I don't think it's McVities in general but the actual Supermarkets and their "Price Wars." Items tend to be compared by their single units/standard size. Let's say the single packets have been falling in price faster than their supposedy moneysaving twin packs. I guess it's a case of the consumer looking at the prices and size and decide for themselves which one is better value.Lurker extraordinaire! no. 4950

I agree that this is probably as a result of the price wars, with Supermarkets being so desperate to undercut each other that they overlook the multipacks when reducing the price of the singles. Consumers are also under the slightly misguided impression that multipacks always equal a bulk reduction, this has never always been the case, often, but not always. We have removed your signature - please contact the forum team if you are not sure why - Forum Team0

My recollection is that the double pack used to be cheaper and was priced at £1.68 (that was after their last increase) and was always cheaper than buying two single packs. Now if you buy 2 single packs you are still paying what you did before, but many people will be into the habit of picking up the double pack because it used to be cheaper.0

It's the same with Heinz baked beans in my local Tesco. The little one person sized tins (not the snap pots, the actual tins) are cheaper when bought individually than in a 3 pack which is actually labelled "Value pack". It used to drive me mad but the snap pots work out cheaper now anyway, they are slightly bigger and about the same price. It's easy to check what is cheaper though, on the shelf label it should also have the price per 100g.0

OP no1 makes you buy the double pack of McVities Digestives, the items are clearly priced on the shelf, its up to you check the price of the item and see if a double pack is cheaper than buying 2 singles or vice versa so no the supermarkets dont think we are fools and no they dont price fix, the supermarkets decide how much to sell an item for,0
