Subtitles and DVD's

Have been given some BBC DVD's, and they're from Germany, and play with German subtitles.
I can't remove these using the subtitle function on my DVD player, and was wondering if they're a permanent feature that I'll have to put up with, or have I missed something along the way.
many thanks for looking in

Sometimes DVD have subtitled hard coded onto the DVD so using the subtitle button on the remote cant remove them0

Dvdshrink does indeed but if they cant remove them with subtitle button there is no way dvd shrink can if they are hard coded onto dvd
Only way is to actually crop the video which you will then loose some of the picture

^not if they are hard-coded...which is how it sounds here...although I'm surprised with it being a BBC DVD...unless it's not original?! Might be worth going to the dvd player setup and making sure the language options are set correctly, and that auto subs is off.. might also be an option in the dvd menuUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

I was wondering that too with BBC DVD but with it being German market perhaps it was done that way for German market as it may have been a English DVD. That waid easy solution would have been to just include subtitles and let the viewer decide0

If they are hardcoded, as others have said they can't be removed as they are part of the picture and removing them would leave a "space" where they originally should be. One option is to try something like logoaway or similar type program to blur or blend them to make them less obvious0

with most of the world speaking English, and many Germans speaking the language better than us natives...it seems unlikely the BBC would hardcode the subs...more likely the dvd has an 'interesting' provenanceUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

[more likely the dvd has an 'interesting' provenance]
Very well put, I would tend to agree0 -
Thanks for looking in folks, and for the interesting discussions that ensued.Baby-Mechanic

If the Subtitles are hard coded (burnt onto the image), and Shrink wont remove the subtitles, it sounds like you have a dodgy copy.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A
