Virgin Media TV - Question

Hello everyone, new here and my first post.

Due to the credit crunch, myself and my wife are looking into cutting the cost of TV viewing down. We are currently with Sky's family package of £21.50 per month. However, after some thought and consideration, we feel it's time to change as we are clearly paying for channels we do not watch. Looking at Virgin Media, their one TV package comes in at £9.00 per month for 90 channels, including all the one's we prefer to watch. However, Virgin Media claim on their site that you can only get this £9.00 month subscription if you have their £11 per month line rental.

My question is; is there anyway we can boycott Virgins £11 per month line rental and just choose the £9.00 only TV subscription?.

Jon - there's a dedicated thread for TV cost cutting - have a look here: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=115125&page=172. You should be able to get Sky to reduce your subscription fee by threatening to leave; that thread has details of what deals others have managed to get by doing this.

I wouldn't have thought Virgin would let you get just the £9 TV without a phone line. I switched my landline and broadband to Virgin because the TV/landline/broadband deal they gave me saved me quite a lot over my previous provider. I take it you don't have a BT landline that you could switch to Virgin?

How many of the premium channels do you watch? Is switching to Freeview completely out of the question?

    Hello Alexei

Thank you for the reply and the link. Being new to the forum, I was unaware as to where to start. However, I will read through the link you provided.

Yes, I have a BT landline but paying for it though Sky. I can easily switch it back to BT again as I can have free evening & weekend calls (which will cut the cost down in the subscription package)

Freeview has crossed my mind, but there are a number of channels we watch that Freeview does not cover. Freeview would be the last resort if we decided to ditch altogether.

The subscription we have with Sky is for TV, phone and internet.

My daughter went for the tv triple deal offer. It's an 18 month contract but you get TV, phone with unlimited weekend landline calls and broadband for £27/month (can get other L TV package instead which may be better for you for £30/month). Also £50 credited to your account when ordered online. It says you can keep your number.

As I remember they did try to charge for some sort of install cost, but it turned out if you're confident at doing it yourself, it shouldnt cost you.

For all the services, I didn't think it was bad - a tv package, pretty quick broadband and a phone. I presume you pay for BT and Sky so should save a bit of money. My daughter also has a mobile contract with loads of free minutes so she uses that for other calls - so the free evening calls bit doesnt really affect her - but you may have to take this into account.

This was a few months ago now but the deal seems to be the same, but I havent read all the smallprint in the latest stuff so don't quote me!
