Plumber in Newry area

Hi all

My heating has gone up the spout - does anybody know of a decent plumber I could get hold of in the Newry area?

Unfortunately I can't get my heating to turn off even through putting thermostats to zero, or putting the timers onto off, holiday mode, etc etc etc.... so I am sitting here sweltering while my oil tank runs itself dry. I think I've used more oil in the past two days than I have over the past two months:rolleyes:

A recommendation would be most appreciated!

    Can you not turn off the electric supply to the pump/boiler as a temporary measure?

    If there's no individual switches (when he did mine the electricitian insisted on powering them from two sockets rather than 'hardwiring' them) use trial & error at the fuse board.

    Be very careful when messing with the electrics, make sure you turn of the boiler and not the pump, if your stats are refusing to turn of the boiler then switching the pump of on its own could cause an explosion should the pressure release valve also fail. If isolating the electirc supply to your oil boiler isn't straight forward then turn of the oil supply at the oil tank.

    :eek::eek::eek::eek:Am sh*tting myself now....

    Thank you everyone for your advice. I've unfortunately only just got back to my pc as I'd been out at funeral and with relatives the rest of the time. Neither the [STRIKE]house[/STRIKE] boiler nor the hot tank have exploded (which I'd been having visions of all day). Before I went I looked for a big switch which said "OFF" on it, but it simply didn't occur to me to look outside in the actual boiler thingy in the garden. Am going to put my wellies on right now and try to locate the OFF switch, and if I can't find that then I'll use (not so) Witless's suggestion and remove the fuse from the switchboard. Thank you again everyone. Cathy, thank you for the link. I think I'll have to take tomorrow as "emergency leave" and get on the blower first thing.

    Unlikely to happen but as Wookey said turn off the oil at the tank-OK you might need to bleed it to work again but what the heck.

    Sorry about your troubles - these things always happen at the worst time.

    Thanks Dave, I don't think there is ever a good time for either your heating to bogger itself or for a funeral. Anyway, there is nothing on my fusebox which relates to the heating and I don't have a torch with a battery in it, so I am still sitting here sweating like a piggy.

    Isn't any need to worry, it does sound though as more an electrical problem than a plumbing one. If the boiler stat is wonky simply replacing it should solve the problem.

    Just as a side note each boiler thermostat has two stats inside it, one is for adjusting the temprature and is usually operated by a dial on the face of it. The second one is a high limit stat, it should kick in and stop the boiler in the event of the first stat failing and/or pump failure, this high limit stat has a manual reset on it. The last line of safety is usually the pressure release valve which should be fitted to all boilers, its simply a spring operated valve which should blowoff once the water in the boiler starts to boil and either the pump or associated pipework is not circulating enough cooler water thru the boiler to stop the expansion. If this valve fails then an explosion is possible, i have never personally heard of it happening with an oil boiler but then again murphys law :)

    Thanks again everyone!

    Someone I was moaning to at the funeral on Sunday passed on a contact and he came on Monday morning. He spent a large part of the day sorting it out, and then came back in the evening and is coming back Tuesday to finish the job. He explained it to me - explanation went straight over my head:o but at least the heating is off and it is being dealt with.
