Business Mileage Help Please

I work for Royal Mail and get paid a milage allowance to get from home to work. This is due to an enforced move and will last for 3 years.

The rate is 40p per mile for the first 5000 miles then 25p for each mile after that.

I was told that I may be able to claim some kind of tax allowance once the milage goes down to 25p per mile (which It does after about 8 months)

Can anybody help.

I have not had to deal with this situation before so I am will ing to be corrected on what I say now.

I can't see that you can claim under the Approved Mileage Payments regime since the journeys are ordinary commuting and not business travel Under that scheme you could claim for tax relief on 40p per mile for the first 10,000 miles each year.

Having said that it seems that the payments you are receiving should not be subject to tax as they would fall under the exemptions granted to relocation expenses.

Perhaps someone knowledgeable can provide more definite advice.

No problem - just that I was in the eighties - detached duty big thing at that time.
