I think the thing that surprises me most is how much they're "allowed to keep to live on" in the time between when they go BR and when it ends. e.g. A family of 4 could reasonably say their food/groceries bill is £500/month. When you tot up all the outgoings they're allowed to keep it's a fortune. I'd have thought they'd have been allowed similar to "dole + work costs" for the two years. After all, they've had their choices/fun with the money, it would seem "only fair" that they were told how much they had to live on and not the other way round.

Years ago it was a total "shame for life" thing, now it's more like "just popping out to the court, won't be long, when I get back we'll go out for dinner because it's back to normal"

I noticed how much people are putting down for groceries etc, if the avarage cost of groceries is £450 - £500 per month then why do people on benefits only get a fraction of this fo EVERYTHING not just shopping. Surely if it was the real cost of shopping then people on benefits/ dla/ pensioners etc would be starving to death.
I think that the bankruptcy board here has become a "WHAT CAN I GET AWAY WITH" board now.
I have also noticed that a lot of these people are the first to slag off benefit scroungers etc.

my wife spends 140 a month on the monthly shop, other than things that need to be aquired fresh like milk/bread & that shop feeds six of us. i pay my rent council tax gas/eleci broadband/phone tv mobile with a low income. have no debt.

home cooked and smart price is fine by me if it keeps my girls in an ever increasing amount of gymnastics lessons, and my eldest son climbing to the top of any wall.

I only do it cos their worth it.;)

I do love these threads with comments by people who haven't had to go through it. Clueless is not the word.............
It's something that is easy to read up on, the process is there for everyone to see. Perhaps you mean the emotional side.

I noticed the other day that the arguements against both bankrupts and benefits use the same points, if the system wasn't so often abused people might not have such strong views.

That is certainly part of it.

But then again, there are a lot of people who believe some utter rubbish about it. Factually I mean.

I have visited the BR board on here, in fact the DFW and BR board was where I started my postings on this site.

I have never had the same vitriol thrown at me on there as I have in the moneysaving arms because I am on benefits....everyone on the DFW and connected boards have always been really nice and welcoming.

When reading the BR boards, the thought that often goes through my mind is "There but for the grace of god go I" as it could quite easily have been us when we lost our home in the last recession.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

isnt it amazing that those of us who have no clue on the issues of being in debt/bankruptcy and the sheer trauma it actually causes to people besides the trauma of the reason behind it, death of a partner, jobloss, family breakup ect ect, find it so easy to condemn people!!

i have never yet met a person who is actually 100% safe in the knowledge that nothing unexpected is going to happen to cause a major life crisis cos basically thats life.
the saying "i never thought it would happen to me" rings out in high volume!!

and if you have been lucky enough to have never been a situation you have no idea on just how you would cope with it or what your actions may be and i would like to bet they are totally opposite to the actions you say you would take.

be thankful that you have never had to be in a bad situation, and be tollerant of those who have and most probabaly come through as a much stronger person having coped with that trauma!! after all they be the ones who you actually turn to for support.

only the minority of people play the system, but is that any reason to condemn everyone? and i take offence at the word SCUM banded about to describe people, you actually dont know any of them so why do you feel that you can safely collate every person who has had problems or who is on a benefit as this dispicable name??

my point exectly those who have suffered are the strong people!! kind, and helpful to others in a situation, tollerant of most!!

  • I've read this thread with interest, some points are valid and others in my opinion a little harsh.

Please remember that for many people with consumer debt bankruptcy isn't a choice, it's the only option open to them. That was my experience anyway. In the spring of 2007 I had to face up to the fact due to ill health and relationship breakdown I had more debts than I could handle. I rang the CCCS and was advised to file for bankruptcy. I didn't want to do that so I struggled on for another year, making minimum payments when I could and using one card to pay of another when I couldn't.

By January 2008 the situation was becoming impossible so I contacted CCCS again and got the same advice, go bankrupt. CAB said the same thing and despite my pleas CCCS would not put me onto either an IVA (not enough spare income and no property etc to protect) or a debt management plan. I was told that on a DMP it would take until 2036 to clear my debts. I said that I didn't care, but to no avail, the CCCS wouldn't budge. I ended up feeling pretty let down by them.

So in the end, with all other options closed to me, I went bankrupt. I wasn't happy about doing it then and I'm still not happy about it now. The only good thing that's come out if for me is that I've made by mind up to live without credit from now on. I don't intend to ever owe anyone anything ever again. Debt causes stress and misery and it's just not worth it the unhappiness it creates.
