Hi
I looked into to getting these becaue they look fantastic. After loads of research it appears that they are very unreliable and prone to breaking (the mechanism not the glass) so we decided against it. Your first question should be what it the guarantee on the mechanism. A lot of companies fitting them offered little or no guarantee so you could be left with expensive broken doors a year down the line. I really don't think cost should be the major factor here.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful but please do bear in mind my advice.0 -
Hi,
Where did you find this research? We are about to order some but I hadn't heard there were any problems with them.
Any info much appreciated. We were thinking about getting them from Wickes but the builder reckons he can get PVC ones a lot cheaper.0 -
Hi 3under3,have you considered how much of the actual window will be taken up with pvc,we realised we would need aluminium frames for a 10ft set as the bulkiness of pvc ment when folded back they were very wide still and didnt give the max amount of light when closed as it was more pvc!
I found a website called the folding sliding door company http://www.foldingslidingdoors.com/index.htm based in mainland uk but will deliver to NI who look very well priced...but they were closed over weekend so i will contact them today.
Im now scared about the guarentee though, its an expensive mistake to make!

I wouldn't go so for as to call it research. I read a lot on the internet and then when I spoke to several firms and asked about guarantees they basically said there was very little guarantee and they were prone to problems. 1 firm said they had stopped selling them because of the hassle of constant complaints about the mechanisms failing. There was one company up north that I considered going with but wondered how long would I have to wait for a repair if they weren't local so decided against it.0

guarentees worth nowt if the firm goes bust - plenty are as we all know especially in anything to do with the building game.
Also with energy saving being the big thing you may be better to keep the top 2 feet bricked up (biggest heat loss) and use patio doors with windows ...think insulation!!!!0 -
I used to work in a company that designed this kind of product, metal technology in antrim, and if you contact them they can give you a list of suppliers who will be able to sort it out for you.0

Calderwood Glass in Newtownabbey should be able to manufacture this for you, give them a ring for a quote.....
