Paypal Unauthorised Payment Complaint

I recently had an unauthorised sum of just under £1000 taken from my bank account through Paypal.

I have no idea how this happened, no-one could have got hold of my password, and although Paypal responded promptly, they proceeded to hold the money for over two weeks which was quite distressing as i am a student and had trouble coping without such a large sum of money.

The money hit my Paypal account at last today, though it will take a further 2-3 working days to eventually be back in my bank account, which with the weekend will be almost a month since the money left my account.

I intend to complain to Paypal and wish to seek compensation for the trouble this has caused me and i'd like to know what my rights are and how i should go about this.

Also, what do Paypal do to people who try to make fraudulent payments? Are their details passed on to the authorities? Ridiculous thing is i actually have the name/address of the snake who tried to pinch my cash as they tried to send items to their address whilst paying on my account (hence how it was picked up).

Looking forward to hearing what people have to say.

  • wow - I have had a few dissapointing transactions with Paypal with mixed results in getting my money back and this was only ever over £10-20 items.

I would suggest the contacting the Police over this, especially if you have the address of the little S***

else perhaps the Citizens advice buro / family solicitor.

if you have any insurances of any kind you may also find you have legal protection cover where you have access to a solicitor for advice

PayPal should have a complaints procedure on their site. Of course there terms and condition will be heavily weighted in their favour.

Be firm when complaining - I require a response within 7 days. And follow up immediately if you hear nothing.

PayPal are are joke at the best of times. If they drag their feet then escalate your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman:

PayPal are now authorised in Luxembourg but have agreed to remain a voluntary member of the FO Scheme in the UK.
