just another thought how much would it cost per day to travel?0

£31 a day to travel, and am not sure of the hours yet, i haven't been told, i assume they are 9-5.0

in my life it would be a no brainer, a 4 hour commute is loonsey and after tax your looking at no more than 3500......
local for me.

so it would cost you £910 a month to travel?0
-
Well that is the funny thing, when i had a look at an annual ticket it was £2296.00, and a monthly was £220.00, plus i would then have to get a monthly bus pass.
I am swaying to the local one myself now, i feel quite exhausted thinking about the travelling LOL!0 -
so it would cost you £910 a month to travel?
Only if planning on working a seven day week......
4.3 (weeks) X 5 (days) = 21.5 days a month
21.5 (days) x £31 (daily cost) = £666.50  per month
(or £155 per week)
Assume 4 weeks annual leave: Annual cost to travel is OVER £7,000
It's safe to assume that you a lot of people have to travel for their job, and that is something to consider, but 8 hours per day is WAY beyond normal, and you have to consider those hours as part of your working day - does the salary look so good when it's a 12-14 hour day? (assuming that 1-2 hours is acceptable travel time for a decent job)
Of course, only you know how important the distance job to your future career, but I know I for one could not do that kind of travelling every for anything.
Why are you leaving your current job? To me, it sounds as though neither job is making you better off - as the first, is a drop, and the second, the travelling costs alone cancel out all the wage increase - never mind the mind boggling travel hours.
Can't you sit tight and wait for something slightly more suitable, that increases your prospects career-wise, or isn't there a chance of things improving where you are?0 -
I don't have a choice i was made redundant on the 31st of December, so i am currently working my four weesk notice.
I have applied for over 70 jobs, but these two jobs are the only ones that have come back to me.0 -
If the job with the travelling would give you better long term career prospects then that would be the one to take. You have to invest in your career and not just think of it as something to pay the bills.
After you've been there a while, perhaps you could consider moving to give yourself an easier commute?0 -
Sorry Msflower,
I read your original post to check and managed to miss the one a couple of lines down that tells me that, doh!!!
Ok, well to be perfectly honest, if it was me, I wouldn't even consider doing a job that involved 8 hours travelling a day, and cost me £7k a year to get to. You could buy and run a fairly new small car for that amount of money.
The near job might be a drop in your current (or last job) salary, but by the time you take the extra tax and NI off the £7k payrise of the distance job, LESS travelling, well, aren't you going to be worse off anyway?
Personally (and you did ask us what we would do!) I would take the nearer job, and keep looking for something else - it's nearly always easier to find work when you're in work.
I hope you find the right decision that works for you.0 -
Personally I would take the local job, but only because of the travelling. As others have said you need to consider stability of the job, career prospects, what you want to do with your life outside of work etc , but if all things were equal the local one would win out every time.0
