tax free allowance

Could someone please give me some advice regarding tax free allowance.

My wife has a part time job, she will earn around £5000 by the end of the current tax year. She filled out a p46 earlier in the year and her tax code is listed as BR on her weekly payslip. She pays approx £25 per week in tax.

- Should she be paying tax as she is getting payed under £5,435 per annum.
- Is tax code BR correct.
- If elligible to reclaim tax, how would she go about claiming this back.
- We have a joint child tax credit claim, does this affect the tax free allowance and/or reclaim (if elligible)

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

No, she needs to get proper a code number, her employer should have sent the P46 to their tax office to get one for her. She needs to phone the tax office and ask them to sort out a code number for her. If she gets it soon then the tax already deducted will get refunded with her wages.

What box did she tick on her P46? The choices were A, B or C.
Quidco cashback paid out so far £745.89 :j

She chose choice A in the "your present circumstances" section (employee part)

and her employer chose Box C (BR) in the "tax code used" section (emplorer part)

was the tax credits evaluation before or after the new job?
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)
  • Tax credits eval was before the new job as she didn't start until June but they have been notified of all changes in circumstances including her new job - this adjusted the claim accordingly.

If she chose A her employer should also have used A and given her a 603L cumulative tax code. She should be asking her payroll department why they used C.
