Dragging up an old thread, but..

Anyone know if this machine is better than the current one at Lidl?

It's a "Singer Serenade", no model number mentioned.

Not looking for super heavy duty machine or anything, but would rather have just basic good quality and usefulness.

    Any thoughts on this appreciated.

I can't compare the two models as I don't have either of them, but I do own both a Singer and an E&R. My Singer is years old, a hand me down from my Grandmother and is perfectly reliable, the E&R is about 3 years old.

I've had to buy lots of new needles for the E&R due to breakage, the poxy thing is a nightmare to thread, a stitch which is perfect when I finish one day will be a complete nightmare the next and it's been known to take me over an hour to set the bloody thing up just to sew a straight line. Needless to say, it's now collecting dust.

The above could be due to the fact that I am very used to the Singer. It also should be mentioned that Singer may, like most other manufacturers, 'not make them the way they used to', but I shall never get an E&R again. I was very disappointed. It wasn't one of the cheapest models either, but can't tell you which one it is as it's been put away!

How much sewing are you planning on doing with it?

Probably not too much in all honesty - alter clothes, make the odd curtain, etc.

Just can't stand buying stuff that you end up replacing, when you could for a few quid more get something better in the first place!

Thanks for your opinion - think I'll go have a look at the Singer!

Just a quick update in case anyone is remotely interested:
The machine Lidl are selling is actually a Singer "8280".
Next cheapest price I can see is £95, and the reviews are generally quite good.
Went for one of these, and although there are a few plastic bits here and there, the internal chassis is solid metal, and it seems pretty good for the money.

Thanks for letting us know splodger! I'm pleased that you're pleased and, if it's anything like mine, will see you through many many years!

    Happy sewing :)
