Sky/Freeview/Freesat

We are just about to cancel our Sky TV (after 10 years) as we can no longer afford it (boo hiss!!)

We have been looking at getting a Freeview box instead, but someone at work mentioned Freesat, since we will have a dish and box from the Sky contract.

What's the difference between them? Can I use the existing dish to get Freesat?

I hate technical things!

You can buy a freesat box and plug your existing cable into it or you can just cancel Sky keep the box and get the free to air channels.
If you go down the freeview route you don't need a dish as it comes down your aerial
  • Freesat also do some free HD channels, and you can get a PVR box as well now.

The sky free to air channels will be your cheapest method as you will need to buy a freesat box to get it working, but it will use your existing dish.

    hi
i canceled my sky several years ago and have had freesat for ages.
ive got all the normal channels like bbc1/2/ bbc three /channels 4 more 4/itv 1/2/3/4/ etc etc etc.E4/five us/fiver/film four/sky news bbc news 24 a few music channels there are loads more but these are the ones i generally watch the only thing i dont get is sky sports news.
i just cancelled and left the card in the sky box and it just reverted to freesat.
so basically if your happy with those channels and its free then just ring up and cancel i had no need to buy a new box or viewing card etc.

    saved me a fortune

You dont need to buy any box, your Sky box will pick up the Sky freesat channels, you may need to buy a new viewing card for around £20, but we are using our old card upstairs in oir old box without problems.

Q: I already have Sky digital satellite equipment - what else do I need?
A: All you need to gain access to the free channels available on the digital satellite platform is a Freesat from Sky viewing card, which costs just £19.57. If you’d like to access the interactive services available, you’ll also need a working phone line. To purchase a viewing card please phone Sky on 08448 244 400.
