Cook him his favorite meal or take him to his favorite restaurant/pub.

I won't be here I'm going on holiday on Sunday. Can I also mention that I don't see him that often and we are not really very close anymore

Well perhaps you could make the effort to see him either before or after you go on holiday. It would probably mean a lot more to him than a book sent through the post from some internet company.

I'm hardly not going to go and see him and I most certainly will not be sending it directly to him. I do make the effort to see him as much as I can and I find it very rude the way that you have made this suggestion. You do not know any of my circumstances yet you find it easy to pass comment on what YOU think my Grandpa would prefer!
  • Not really got time to go into town with holiday coming up would need to be something online

The fact that you said this made me think that you would be sending it to him from the internet.

and the fact that you said this
. Can I also mention that I don't see him that often and we are not really very close anymor

led to my suggestion that you make the effort to go see him.

I thought this because I figured he would find it especially nice you've gone to see him if you aren't close. I figured making the effort would involve doing something nice, not just turning up with a present. You know, cook him a nice meal or something.

There was absolutely no need to respond in a rude manner. If I have touched on some sore point, then I am sorry.

  • I work full time and live no where near shops. That was why my comment about buying something on the internet was made. I never mentioned sending it direct. I would never do that to anyone let alone my own grandpa. I also made the comment about not seeing him often as to avoid further suggestions of making dinners etc. I do not belive that I was rude in my reply. No sore point touched on, just your ignorant reply and your need to presume.
  • I think we have both taken each others comments wrongly and I wish to apologise for this. I'm sorry you took what I said in the wrong way and I offended you.

  • How about making up a bit of a hamper, with a couple of miniatures of his fave tipple, some of those little jars of fancy jam, or chutneys ,some nice biscuits and stilton or some such. I did this for my elderly FIL and he loved it. Most supermarkets do a nice range of these little treat type things so easy to get too.

is he still able to write? we gave gran some notebooks & pens & she loves writing down her memories for future generations to read. if not could he use a tape recorder in a similar fashion?
Cleaning the house while children are growing is like shovelling snow when it's still snowing!

Good suggestion, unfortunately he does not have mush use of his hands at all. I have opted for a unique original newspaper from the day he was born
  • My dad would have loved a HUGE box of liquer chocolates.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
