Dented tinned food?
Comments

I did a catering course and they told us to never accept dented tins as there is a risk that air could have got into the tin. If the air gets in it can cause botulism which is a particularly nasty form of food poisoning with a 50% mortality rate. After that I always inspected the tins very carefully!!!0

I've always been led to believe that buying dented cans wasn't good. They can give you poisoning or something nasty. When I have accidently dropped a can at home and dented it, even though I wasn't using it I've opened it up and put the contents in a bowl for the fridge rather than keep it in the cupboard dented.
I don't think we are allowed to sell dented cans at all over here. If the packers damage them while packing they are not put on the shelves. There dumped. I use to work at Woolworths many years ago and this was their policy. It could be different now but I vary rarely see *discounted* dented cans on sale.Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.

I often buy dented tins, have never had anything off in one and by now I have probably brought thousands.
My OH is a foodhygiene consultant and he says it is ok. Obviously if I opened it and it was off I wouldn't use it but the amount I save would be worth the odd can being dodgy.
I recently got 2 cans of sweetcorn from aldi and when I opened them they went bang. The corn was ok though. I don't know why it went bang. OH thinks it had air in. However, it was fine.

I went on a food hygiene course and they talked about dented tins and recommended that you never use them because of bacteria and so on - but saying that i have bought some in the past and i have been ok. I think you just have to be sensible about it.

You would def not use dented cans in business and yes a food hygiene expert would tell you that so would my OH because these days no one wants to be sued!!!
