I would suggest that you don't get too fixed with the idea that more mp necessarily means a better camera. Unless you're going to be enlarging prints to poster size, 4 mp should be plenty. The important thing is to look for a good lens, the greater the optical zoom the better. Avoid the cheapie types currently on offer in supermarkets which offer 6+mp but no optical zoom. Digital zoom is next to useless, you lose definition.
My suggestion would be something like this Panasonic, which has a 2" screen and features such as an image stabilizer which enables a "non-techie" to just point and shoot - which is what your average non-professional user really wants.

If the pictures are not going to be tweaked on a pc, that makes a good optical zoom all the more desirable in my opinion. Also, the "anti camera shake" technology on the Panasonic would probably be very useful (no offence intended!!!)0 -

Look at a Konica Minolta Dimage X60. 5MP, 2.5" LCD, 3xOptical Zoom and a very small camera as well (certainly pocketable). Fairly cheap as well. I've had it for a while and it's not bad. Not bad image quality and great to take anywhere for fun snaps.0 -
How about the Kodak Easyshare LS755?
This is compact, has 5.0mp resolution, x3 optical zoom, rechargeable Li-ion battery and a large 2.5" LCD screen. It has pretty good reviews as a beginner's camera. More details of the camera can be seen here (Pixmania)
BUT, try your local PC World store and see if they have any on clearance. I had a nose around whilst picking up a 1p computer mouse and spotted a large sign saying that this was reduced to only £109.99 (I think they were around £300 when they first came out) and they had 2 or 3 boxes on the shelf. Sorry to jump in on the thread, but I was also thinking about getting a digital for the 1st time.
How about buying 2nd hand? Is this advisable?
Ebay maybe?
Any thoughts?
Thanks,

I've just bought myself a Premier DS-5080 5 meg. digital camera. It's under £50 at Tesco at the moment (over £100 at pixmania.com) and is a great, easy to use compact camera with a large screen that's 2" x 1 1/2". It has a re-chargeable lithium battery, automatic flash, movie mode, self-timer and lots of other features. It's also easy to get to grips with (if I can, anyone can
).
It comes with everything required, including a neat little carrying case and wrist strap ... absolute bargain and the pictures aren't at all bad either.Wins since 2009 = £17,600MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS0 -

I love it - easy to use. Films with sound too.
Great buy.
