I've always taken it to mean anything from he's an odd person to he's a great person. It depends on the context it's used. It can be scorning or it can be praising, it's down to how it's pronounced.

Just one of the great Ulsterisms in my opinion :D

It's used to emphasise what you're saying; you could probably "translate" it as "quite a" (it's a quare lot - it's quite a lot; it was a quare night - it was quite a night; she's put on a quare bit of weight - she's put on quite a lot of weight, etc).

I tried to google, but when you put in "quare" and "root", google assumes you really meant *square* and *root* LOL

The classic NornIrn use is probably "you're a quare geg" - there was a book about NornIrn language which had this title - ah, hang on...

Googling "quare geg" gets you further! LOL

    I hope you found that quare'n'helpful ;-)

I have to admit, I've never thought about the origins of the word despite the fact I must use it about 5 or 10 times a day. It's quare and handy sometimes......
Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we can see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say humbly "Go on, do deformed rabbit again.....it's my favourite". © Terry Pratchett in "Small Gods"
