Last week of work - made a mistake

I handed in my resignation before Xmas and my final day is 16th Jan. However in my haste and excitement for my week off for Xmas I managed to make a mistake on the pricelist I am responsible for creating.

This mistake is to the tune of thousands of pounds. So far I have corrected the mistake and thankfully no customers have yet called about this and the stores which sell the product have called in regarding the mistake but not yet said they have told their customer the wrong price.

My question is could I be held liable by my company for the mistake? i.e if a customer sees the pricelist and complains and wants the product at the incorrect price could they take me to court and ask me to pay the difference??

Unless you are in a very senior position they would not be able to sue you for their loss. However, they are still able to dismiss you whilst you are on your notice period, if they deemed the mistake to be serious enough.

No, if you are an employee you won't be personally liable.

You have opened to the door of diciplinary though.

A price list is not a legal document, you didn't sign it, it wasn't checked by anyone senior and mistakes happen. I think you should own up to it and tell anyone who needs to know. They may want to issue a retraction letter making all customers aware of the change in prices.

If you offer to do all the work surrounding letting your customers know of the mistake then I think they should take it ok. I would be surprised if you get in trouble for what is simply a mistake.

I was under the impression that a pricelist would not be considered a legal document and does not bind the company to sell to the customer at that price. Something about only being an "invitation to treat".

So I doubt that the company would lose thousands because of the mistake.

Its really is irrelavant whether its a legal document or not! We are not talking about court papers here.

If the OP is paid a wage to create accurate price lists and they fail to do that, they could be deemed as "incapable".

The OP is asking if he might be taken to court, so I think it is relevant to tell him / her that I think the answer is no.

    Thanks for all the replies!

Yeh i am not worried about being sacked TBH as I am going full time self employed! I know they wont do this anyway as my manager knows i have made this mistake and knows I have done everything to rectify this, it was on Monday the mistake was seen and my manager has not said anything further. And nothing has been mentioned about a disiplinary.

I just dont want to be taken to court for thousands!! I cant afford it!!

Of course you would not be taken to court. You were an employee of the company and a customer would have no claim against you - and not against the company either just because they had seen an incorrect price on a list.
