Broken tooth..please any advice

Hi there

I have a broken tooth at the back, it did have a filling in but that came out and now one of the molars have split in 2 so I only have less then half a molar, I did have root canal treatment on it before.

I have been in very bad pain and I believe I got some sort of infection in it, I couldnt get an appointment with a dentist so I had to call the dr and ask for anti biotics, which he gave me, the infection seems to have gone down, but last night, my face around the area of the broken tooth started to swell up, I am taking so many pain killers, well over the reccomended dose, this may sound dramatic, but each night I am worried that I wont wake up the next day due to the amount of co codomol and nurofen I am taking.

I am unable to get any appointment with the dentist, I have explained the situation to the receptionist but she is unable to fit me in...
My question is - can I go to a hospital to have this tooth sorted? I have done everything I can my end to help, but I think that I am unable to do anymore...
Please any advice really appreciated.!

Thanks
Sylvia

When did the tooth originally split?

If you've had time to get to the Doctors, have antibiotics, have them work, have them wear off and the tooth flare up again, I would guess it broke a few weeks ago?

Could you not have made an appointment when you originally rang up the dentist for a few weeks time?

If a tooth breaks like I'm thinking you're describing then you will need the loose bit, or possibly the whole tooth removing. Until it is, it will keep flaring up.

If one particular dental practice can't fit you in, you could try NHS direct, or your local PCT. These places will have lists of dentists contracted to provide emergency sessions.

Turning up at A&E isn't really going to get you very far. You'll probably wait for hours and then be told there is no-one with dental experience available, and they'll give you the number of NHS direct.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • Thank you very much for your response.

The tooth came out about a week ago (around xmas) and initially I didnt have much pain, then out of the blue after a couple of days it started to hurt, I only got the anti biotics Monday and it seemed to be going down, the pain comes and goes, I have been waking in the night with bad tooth pain after taking more then the max per day.. (last night I had about 4 cocodomol and 3 nurofen not all at the same time but over 3 or so hours) plus what I am having during the day.

I have phoned the dentist back and the receptionist is meant to be having a word with the dentist and calling me back to see if he can fit me in, I do think that I will need it pulled !! and I know i must be in pain as I am usually very scared of going to the dentist but this time I am praying that I get in today. I have had to take a day off work to try and get this sorted...
If I have no luck with my dentist then I will try your suggestions!

Thank you very much for your help x
