DVD drives don't work on PC

I thought my DVD drive was broke because whenever I put a disc in it wouldn't read it and freeze up the PC until ejected. I got a new DVD drive but the same thing happens.
So it's my PC. I was just wondering what the problem could be and how it could be fixed.
Windows says the drive is working properly.

Format your pc.0

Uninstall the driver in DEVICE MANAGER
then reboot and let it reinstall itself:idea:0 -
If aliEnRIK's suggest doesn't work, it might be interesting to know if you can boot from a CD (such as a Windows 98 boot disk image from somewhere like http://www.bootdisks.us/windows-98/13/windows-98-bootable-cd-images.html). Obviously you'll need to burn the ISO on another drive!
This should tell you whether the problem is related to your installation of Windows or whether there's a more fundamental harware issue.0 -
I've tried uninstalling the driver. I've even reinstalled XP. I've got a separate CD drive (which works), would taking that out and only having a DVD drive work? The View Belongs To Everyone0

Are the jumpers on the drive set correctly? (Master Slave Cable select), and have you installed any software for the drive, Nero etc?0

when you say "doesn't work" what exactly do you mean?, windows xp doesn't support dvd playback as standard, you have to add a piece of software called a codec to play back movies.
It's possible some previously installed software has set a "file type" association which is causing the drive to lock when you insert a dvd movie disk try a dvd game see if that works ok and let us knowclick here to achieve nothing!0 -

I'll try a game if I can find one. CDs do the same though. Could it be that the PC isn't very good? 128 (or something like that) RAM and 10 gig hard drive? The View Belongs To Everyone0 -
Like barber says, define 'work'?
