Claiming back from premium rate numbers?

Hi all,

Just a quick one here. Over the last month i've been back and forth with Virgin trying to sort out my broadband service and this has required me contacting them on their premium rate number, from my mobile.

As it was their problem i was having to call, i explained to the lady that i would like to claim the money back and she said i would have to write to their head office and supply proof of the calls and charges.

Because of this, i asked my mobile provider for an itemised bill.

Looking through, i notice i have a fair few other charges to premium rate numbers, ranging from banks to student loans company and job centre plus.

My question is, do i have any reasonable claim to write to HSBC, Barclaycard, Job Centre Plus and student finance wales to try and claim this money back?

For Virgin it was their fault i was having to call as they screwed up on my bill, but with the others is wasnt quite the same.

Is it worth trying, or will i just be wasting my time?

If it is, are there any template letters out there that will be of any use? I tried a search but could not find anything.

Exactly what grounds do you think you have to claim anything from these other companies? They are not actually premium rate numbers anyway, most of them.

You will be wasting your time.

I doubt you will have any claim, Virgin probably provide another way to contact them, so you chose to use the phone. They won't put you in prison for trying tho' and it may make you feel better letting them know you are not happy.

As for the other places you mention, the same thing, they provide other means of communication but you chose to use the phone.

Best thing to do is learn what the numbers are going to cost you before you use them. Also use the site below to find a cheaper number.

Even if you can't find a cheaper number for the department you need, sometimes if you ring another department they will put you through.
