  • Sounds like he should re-think his preferred career choices!!
Train to be a plumber or even better a dentist! There are 3 jobs in my local paper this week, and we are a real small rural area, advertising dentist jobs with wages £66k-£100k!!!

My FIL is a driving instructor and makes a good living but I feel sorry for the MIL as he is out all hours esp. in the summer Monday to Sunday.

In fact my partner wanted to follow in his footsteps and I've done all I can to dissuade him - his dad probably puts in a 60-70hr week and most of those hours are done at the weekend or in the evening you get no sort of family life being a driving instructor.

MIL is happier now (I've provided a grandchild) but many's the time we've gone round to theirs to see her sitting in her armchair looking rather lonely wondering when he is going to make an appearance.

  • If you're seriously thinking about it, have a look at a few of the driving instructor forums. ADI Forum and DTT are both good place to start. And ask lots of questions.

With the training, generally, independent trainers can be a better way to go, as they'll normally be cheaper in the long run, plus you know who you're dealing with.

Personally, on a average week, I do between 30-40 hours of lessons. This puts me out of the house anywhere between 45-60 hours. It sounds a lot, but in my last job I was paid from for 8 hours a day, and was out of the house for roughly 10-11 hours a day including travelling and loitering around before and after work.

Personally, I love the job, I run my own business teach people something they'll (hopefully :D) remember for the rest of their life. Yes it's hard work, but it's also very rewarding.

  • I completely agree with all of the above (which is strange in itself!).

All I will add is that the research you do before making any decisions is free and will save you time, money and pain later.

I'd certainly recommend hissing sid's link (http://www.squidoo.com/driving_instructors especially as it links to my blog, ta guys) and I would also second Golfballs advice to get involved with the forums where you'll get independent advice from hundreds of guys who are doing it right now, have done it, or provide training for instructors themselves.
