Evening all,
I am the worlds worst cook but as part of a new year resolution I've challenged myself to be able to cook a variety of three course Scottish meals to perfection within six months.
I've just made my first oatcake/smoked salmon/cream cheese starter (taste good - lacks something in the display stakes maybe!)
Anyway, can anyone point me in the direction of a beginners guide to Scottish cooking?
Cheers

Tablet is a scottish 'sweet' you can have with a coffee instead of mints etc.
2lbs sugar
Can condensed mild (the one that's about £1.10 or so)
knob of butter
1/2 mug milk
Put all in a large pot (not non-stick), and heat gently, stirring occasionally so that it doesn't stick or burn onto pot. Cook on low heat about 30 mins, then remove from heat and put the pot in your sink. Beat the mixture until very thick (you can stop beating for a few minutes and start again - your arm will get sore!). Once very thick it will go grainy if you drop a little bit onto a plate.
Pour into a greased tin (swiss roll tin size with 1-2cm edge). Allow to set, sore squares in it with knife while cooling.0 -

Make sure you try Cranachan - it's amazing! Just triple the quantity of whisky they recommend!0

my brother got maw broons recipe book for christmas. Lots of easy, tasty scottish recipes! U could also try making home made soup... No need for recipe books just throw all the vegetables u like in a big pot with some chicken stock and simmer for an hour... (If using pulses like lentils, split peas, broth mix etc. steep them overnight in cold water) U can throw in bits of chicken, bacon, ham or any other extras u like)0

My favourite is home made tattie soup, no measurements just throw it all in till you get the right consitency. It took me several attempts before I got it right.
6 slices of slice sausage boiled itself to get rid of the fat. Then 4 beef stock cubes added to a soup pot filled 3/4 with water. Dice the sausage, 6 diced potatos, a bag of grated carrots and 2 leeks, salt, pepper and some parsley, bring to the boil and simmer for an hour or so. Cheap and tasty. Good Luck0 -
