I have seen Harvin brand Morello cherries in syrup from Lidl suggested as a substitute. The suggestion was made by someone writing for The Independent who was having trouble sourcing all the ingredients for Heston Blumenthal's Black Forest Gateau!0

Found them listed on Amazon.com at $22.99 a jar !!!! .No luck in finding a supplier in th U K0

Ohhhh but I wish they sold them here!
I am not sure how the Lidl ones work, but if you can find them, make sure to buy a good quality ice cream (chocolate or vanilla work best), some whipping cream, then whip it and then create a lovely Sundae by layering the Amarena cherries, ice cream and whipped cream in a tall glass. YUMMY!!!! Memory of childhood during hot Roman summer afternoons....
Edited to add the link for the Independent article mentioned above:

And a supplier in the UK (but wholesale only - maybe a few of us can get together and order a giant jar of the stuff and share it out! I wish!):

Believe me; it is well worth seeking out the real McCoy!
I first came across Amarena Fabbri Wild Cherries (Grottes) in Syrup whilst on holiday in Sorrento in 1986; I was taken by the ornate blue and white jar so I brought some home, little knowing what delights lay within. The jar was very quickly emptied of its contents and now sits in the bathroom, along with several others, as pretty containers for bath-salts
The fruits are the most succulent and flavoursome wild cherries imaginable, laced in a almost bitumen consistency of the thickest most lavish kirsch syrup. They're great on their own or as an accompaniament to ice-creams and sorbets, bananas or as Heston has discouverred as the base for a lavish Black Forest Gateau. In fact, since the early eighties much of Amarena Fabbri's exports have been to the sweet-toothed, fruit loving nationals of Germany - hence you are more likely to come across Jars with Italian and German labelling than English.
On returning to the UK, I had great trouble tracking down a supplier. Harrods lower delicatessen food hall used to stock them and I've had several jars from there in the past. They often appear on ebay.co.uk, ebay.com and ebay.de. They tend to sell for around £10.00 for a 120 gramme jar which contains around 25 cherries to £20-30 for the more common sized jars. If you want to buy them in bulk, you can get a 3.2kg tin along with 5kg ceramic serving pot and spoon for about £40-45 on ebay.com (USA site).
Sadly, other than Harrods, I've not found a regular supplier in the UK. Even Italian Delicatessens in the UK tend not to have them. Bizarrely, you're more likely to find them in a German or Bavarian deli. If you know anyone going to Italy or Germany its well worth asking them to get them for you as they will be considerably cheaper thereat.
Don't go blaming me if you get hooked on them!:D0 -
Not much chance of getting hooked if I can't find a regular supplier!
Thanks for the info everyone, we're off to London at easter and were planning to take the kids to see harrods anyway (sad I know) so now I know what I'll be looking for.0 -
I registered on this forum specially to post a reply so I hope this helps and I haven't got the wrong product.
Ocado.com sells Fabbri Fruit & Syrup Wild Cherries 230g at £4.95 so you could have them delivered to your door!
Happy New Year!0 -
My late husbands favourite cherry dish was 'Kirshwalder' which is cherries soaked overnight in brandy topped with ice cream and cream and chopped nuts .We had this once in Germany years ago and slid out of the resteraunt, first time I got legless on a pudding:)0

I had a look on the Ocado site, and couldn't find them but then searched for 'fabbri' and it found them, but here's the linky-link!
**Thanks to everyone on here for hints, tips and advice!**:D

Bimbarossa, you haven't made enough posts yet to be allowed to quote and post links. I believe it might be a minimum of 10 posts til you can do that, sorry. They brought in this rule to try to stop spammers signing up just to sell us stuff, now they just make lots of useless posts before they post the links
.
It's only a game
