in Cutting tax
Hi all. Hoping some tax brains on this board can give me some advice, I'm in a bit of a muddle.
I was self-employed as a contractor for six months towards the end of 2007, and during that time was paid directly in to my bank account without any tax or national insurance deductions.
At this time I registered with the tax office to pay my national insurance monthly by direct debit.
I switched to non-contract employment at the very end of 2007 and from then on paid tax and NI in the usual PAYE manner.
So I have the following problems:
1) I never got round to cancelling my NI direct debit stuff, so I imagine I have been paying two lots of NI since then. How can I go about reclaiming this?
2) How do I find out about paying the appropriate taxes for this period? I tried registering online for self-assessment but they require a UTR number which apparently is on my tax return. I have not been sent one of these, but then I have changed my address from the one I gave the tax office when informing them about my contract work in 2007.
I am very confused by it all and just want it sorted really! What is the easiest way of doing this?
Thanks

You need to self assess for 2007-8 by 31 Jan - you are probably not going to make this deadline, so are liable to a £100 fine, assuming tax is due.
I think easiest way to sort this is to call in at your local tax office. Take some ID with you. They will be able to trace your UTR using your previous address and then you can register to file online. They will also inform the relevent department that your self employment has ceased and get the DD cancelled. That department can also deal with any NIC overpayment.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -
Did your contractor deduct 20% from the payments made to you for this period.
I would recommend that you contact an accountant to deal with the tax return as this would ensure you claim all of the allowable expenses.
If they have deducted 20% tax yopu may even be due a refund in which case the late filing penalty would not be due.
The NIC office will be able to issue you with a refund for the overpaid Class 2 NIC
