Do i need to pay tax on these earnings?

I am full time employed and pay tax through my employer. I have also been doing some freelance work at home and have earned an extra income of about £1500 for the whole year.... My question is:

(1) Do i need to pay tax on these earnings

(2) Should I pay for an accountant, and how much would it cost.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes, this income is taxable. If this was a one off piece of work, you just need to ask for a self assessment for 08-09 and complete it - you will then pay the tax by 31/1/10. If this is an on going job, you need to register as self employed and to pay NIC's by DD. On £1500 income, I dont see the need for an accountant, but it really depends on what the source of the income is and how complicated your affiars are.

If you are not going to do this work any more, I suggest you just declare it as a one-off.
