Dreamweaver help - div tag background doesn't show on web

Hi

I'm learning Dreamweaver from the ground up, trying to make a very simple but nice looking web site.

I've got the early stages of the home page done and online - background and banner, displaying properly on my new domain, but for some reason one element of my page won't show up in either IE or Opera, despite showing up when I preview it in Dreamweaver.

Following a Dreamweaver guide (I'm using CS3) I'd selected everything and put a 'div tag' round it all so that it would sit in the centre of any page, whatever the screen resolution. I designed a nice background image for this div tag using Fireworks, but this image just won't show up. I've uploaded all files to my server but it just won't show, but everything else is working fine (items are centred etc.).

Can anyone suggest what is wrong?

Just a possibility, but if you have one background image covering the whole page and another for your centre div, maybe the one for the centre is displaying underneath your other one.

You can get round that by specifying a high z-index in your CSS for your centre div, e.g.

z-index:100;

I've just found out what the prob was - I'd only saved the image as a .png and so for some reason it wouldn't display it on the web. Once I exported it as a jpeg it was fine.

Sounds like you know a bit more about CSS than me - it's taken me ages to do what I could have done with Word (albeit ultimately less satisfactorily) in an hour.

Probably Dreamweaver expects any images to be in jpeg format and codes the HTML accordingly. So if the HTML is coded to look for a file image1.jpg it ain't going to load image1.png.

I use Dreamweaver but code the HTML and CSS myself rather than use DW's wysiwyg feature (except when I get stuck! Lol).
