As a child I used to have an account with the Post Office into which I could make small pocket-money sized deposits and withdrawals. It was a brilliant way for me to learn about saving and banking, though I'm sure it used to cost the Post Office more in admin than the deposits accrued. Can anyone recommend something similar for kids now?

Most buidling societies have them. You just need to find the one with the best interest rates.
We find Britannia to be very happy to take change in to kids accounts, and Nationwide to be very awkward and limited (4 bags at a time, and acting annoyed)0 -
There's a list of some of the best here: http://www.moneyfacts.co.uk/money/savings/14/childrens-savings-accounts.aspx , although the first two are obviously not instant access.
I know that Halifax will allow as much change as you can carry to be paid into their Save4It (as long as it's in the correct bags), and you can pay in and take out as often as you like, don't know about others.0
