There is some interesting information about what is considered 'poverty in UK' on the Joseph Rowntree site.

Joseph Rowntree was the first person to do any research into the meaning of poverty, approx 1900 IIRC. He talked about a person who could 'smoke no tobacco and drink no beer. He could write no letters because he couldn't afford a stamp' - this would be at a time when a stamp cost a penny.

My mother would have been horrified at the very thought that a woman would choose to buy cigarettes rather than feed and clothe her children. Also, buying 'ready meals' or take-aways was never an option. Everything we ate was made at home, even bread was baked by my aunt sitting on the floor beside the Yorkist range.

i think poverty is what those children in romania have to live in. it is not their fault so i believe they shouldn't be punished.

until our children are living in landfill sites in half built half destroyed houses our children are not in poverty!

and i hate programs like that teen mum makes other young mothers look bad when i know they are not.

Joseph Rowntree is rolling in his grave at some of the obscene nonsense spouted in his name by said foundation.

I'm sure there are some people who actually believe rubbish like, Poverty is having to make do with Freeview instead of Sky...
  • well in my opinion poverty is not being able to afford your basic needs..such as heating or food...or having to choose between the two etc...poverty to me is having to do without things that every basic man woman and child needs to live  although im sure others will say poverty is much much worse..there are actually people all over the country having to choose weather to eat or be warm...or weather to have the lights on in place of having the heat on.
that in my opinion is poverty-not being able to afford basic human rights.

is even more fun than going to San Sebastian, Irun, Hendaye, Biarritz, Bayonne
or being sick to my stomach on the Travesera de Gracia in Barcelona
