Returning things bought on the internet.

Hi I bought some puzzleballs from jigsawpuzzles direct just before Christmas. When the puzzles arrived they were not the same as the picture on the web site so didn't want them. I now want to return them. The total purchase inc p+p is £53.93 . I have been sent a returns label, so I phoned this morning to ask if the label included insurance. The chap was very vague and said that he thought it would.

I am now in a quandry, do I return the puzzles, hope they don't get lost, and hope that the money is recredited to my credit card. Or do I hold onto the puzzles and sell them on Ebay next Christmas.

I am now concerned that if I return the puzzleballs I might end up with nothing, but then £53.93 is a lot to pay for something you don't want.

Any suggestions? or Has anyone else bought from the same site and had excellent service?

Any help/ suggestions would be fab.

TIA

Dx

Just return them with the label provided, but ask for a free proof of posting at the post office. As long as you can prove that you posted it then they should refund you, even in the highly unlikely event that it goes missing.

You may wish to check the MAXIMUM insured sums when asking for proof of posting.

I think that the basic proof of posting covers your item to the value of circa £32. Values higher than this will require extra insurance.

I'm sure if you ask at the post office they will be able to give you accurate insurance values.
  • I've somewhat lost my taste for the net this year, due to problems with returns.

It's pretty much my own fault and I think I've learned from it. I got a phone for Christmas, purchased from an online company, and complete with a contract. Despite assurances to the contrary, the contract kicked off when the phone was dispatched and not 25th Dec, but that's by the by.

The phone was faulty, and the manufacturer told us to return it. We arranged with the supplier to swap it and took a day off work. Late in the morning of that day, they phoned and said they did not have a replacement and didn't know when they would get one.

After much negotiation they agreed to refund the phone and cancel the contact (though we have had to pay the first month). That said, and following a warning from another victim, we checked with the phone company and they had not cancelled. We are still fighting that one.

Meanwhile, we had ordered screen protectors and in car chargers from 2 other companies. They both were subject to 7 day returns and both arrived last week. The screen savers are being taken back without issue, but I had another fight to get the charger returned even though its only been in my possession for 6 days.

Oh yes, and some cosmetics I ordered in mid December, and paid using Nochex, never turned up and the company is not answering calls or emails.

I don't doubt I'll get all these things sorted eventually, but was the cost saving worth the hassle?

Items bought online, from catalogue etc are subject to Distance Selling Regulations,(DSR), see Q 3 HERE, and have a clause in them that you can return items without reason up to 7 WORKING days from day after receipt see Consumer Direct ; -
    3. Know your distance selling rights
    • check your cancellation rights before making a purchase: under the Distance Selling Regulations you can get a full refund on many products if you cancel within seven working days after the day of receipt
    • if returning goods you are entitled to a refund of the original delivery cost but check the terms and conditions to see who will cover the cost of returning them
    • traders are not allowed to deduct a restocking charge or administration fee for returned goods
If the "subject to 7 day returns" in your post are company T&Cs, then they have no relevance as they are attempting to take away your statutory rights.

That only really matters with eBay, in this case if ti goes missing and the customer can prove that they posted it using the label provided, it is the companies problem, not the customers.

I was particularly worried about returning the puzzles as I had phoned the company loads of times and got no answer. I realise that the company may well be run by just a couple of people and could have been closed over the Christmas period. However, in the current climate where loads of small businesses are closing, I was worried about returning the goods, not getting a refund and therefore losing both the money and the puzzles.

After a long chat with OH the puzzles have been put in a cupboard to be sold on Ebay next Christmas...................

Who knows, I may even get more than I paid for them :D.

I have had 2 other internet 'mistakes' this Christmas and both times I have been refunded in full and was told to keep the goods if they would be useful to me. I was very impressed....

Buying on the internet is fantastic when it all goes right but, incredibly time consuming when it doesn't...

Good luck with your returns born2bongo.
