company merger, can they change contract?

Hi,
We have just gone through a re-structure and I was lucky enough to keep a job in my company albeit a lower position and my salary has been protected, I won't get any payrise until the scale catches up with me but my salary won't drop.
However I have just found out today that our company is possibly merging with another company, assuming there are no more job cuts and we just merge in, does anyone know whether my contract could still be changed and my salary reduced to match the other people doing the same job?
Any advise would be gratefully received

Have a look at TUPE. In short, they can but only in certain situations however TUPE protection doesn't last forever.Conor
