I'm sure it will. Remember, some lenders are less choosy than others and many reputable high street lenders do now offer credit to people with 'impaired' credit histories. But, as always, make sure you shop around for the best deal! It also helps if you explain your circumstances before you apply as you could save pointless applications and keep down the number of credit searches on your report.

Worth asking Experian and Equifax to LOG A NOTE beside the default entry. If I remember correctly, you are allowed to log an entry with a note saying something like THIS DEFAULT OCCURRED DURING A SHORT PERIOD OF UNEMPLOYMENT. It won't remove the default but will alert a potential lender that you are aware of credit workings and up front with details. Cheers. Bob.

Credit reports aren't used 'against' people. Most of the information held is positive and actually helps people get credit quickly and easily when they want it.

Not quite sure that is how it works...........

  • Thanks - I have placed a note against this account explaining that I was out of work and that I am now paying monthly installments of £225 to clear the outstanding amount. Funnily enough, I also made a couple of larger one off payments of £1300 & £700. This coupled with the monthly installments of £225 (£40 more than I was originally paying) means that I will pay off the loan quicker than if I had not defaulted!!! Do you think that this could help in my cheeky request to remove the default?

I guess it might. It's completely down to the lender of course, the agencies cannot remove the information without the lender's say so.

inmypocketnottheirs - you can add a statement (called a notice of correction) of up to 200 words to information on your credit report if you think having an explanation on there might help when you apply for credit. All the credit reference agencies have information about this on their websites. Look on he Experian site in the FAQs. Not a facility to use frivolously though as it will delay any credit applications you make (lenders have to examine applications containing a notice on by hand). Useful though if you've struggled with your finances because of an unforeseen change in personal circumstances.
