Do I need to fill tax return even I didn't earn any money?

Hi,

I registered as self employment 2 years ago and filled in tax return around this time last year. But after that, I didn't do any self employed work as I was hired by a company and was very busy with that job.

So do I need to fill in tax return this year or some other things I need to do?

Many Thanks

Jerry

Yes, fill it in an send it in. If they have sent you a tax return you may get a penalty of £100 if it's not returned. (more than likely they'll charge it, you'll argue, they'll refund it as no tax is due, but all of that takes time and effort, whereas plonking a couple of zeros on a page, is easier).

If possible, I would take it into your local tax office and at the same de-register as self employed, and explain situation.

You'll still get a form for this year (2008-9) though.

agree - complete and send in the tax return - but you might have missed the deadline for paper returns - are you able to do it on line.

Make sure you show on it that your self employement has finished.

If return goes through all the processes it needs to in time - it may recognise you dont need further tax returns and close the records before the next lot of tax returns are selected for issue.
  • Did you have ANY income?

Tax returns are not just for the self employed.

If you worked as an employee last year, that'll need to go on the Return aswell.
