Chunk of wage missing - tax?

Hi everyone, i worked at M&S over the christmas period as a temp. I wrote all my hours down and have just calculated how many hours i did and then checked to see how much i had been paid. I am £135 short, has this been taken off for tax/emergency tax? I don't want to ring M&S up tomorrow and sound like an idiot demanding my money when its not their fault!

Thanks for any help

It should tell you how much tax you paid on the payslip.

Did they send you a payslip? Sounds like it could be emergency tax but you can claim it back.

I often have this problem as well and i think its something to do with getting paid the number of hours you are contracted and then getting paid overtime next month if that makes sense. i would suggest taking you written hours along with your payslip to your old manager and just raise your concerns. if they have a suitable explanation then fair enough and if not then u probably need to take some more serious measures because £135 is alot of money for us temps.
    hope it all works out
  • Ive only received 1 payslip which was for my first week. Would it be easier just to ring my local tax office as ive got a letter from M&S saying i gave them the wrong part of my P45 (opps) and that i may need to ring the tax office to reclaim any tax overpaid?!

Sorry for my stupid questions but i am terrible with anything to do with numbers and money!

Read your payslip, it should be on there
Do the hours on your payslip marry up with the ones you have recorded.
Does it say on the payslip anything about tax/NI
If you have paid tax, depending on other earnings from April 08 you maybe able to reclaim it.
If you cant understand your payslp pop back into M & S for an explanation
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

  • Just had a payment of £75 from M&S, im assuming the rest is tax?

My complete wage was £390 and i'm 'missing' around £60. When i rang up the tax office the other day the lad said i shouldnt be paying any tax on that amount as i should have been taxed with code ______ when i was taxed with code BR, whatever that means! but thats about as much help he was seen as his 'computer system wasnt working'.

Do i have to ring the tax office again to get the tax back?

    WHERE ARE YOUR PAYSLIPS???

BR is not the right tax code if this is your only job. You should be asking the tax office ot issue a coding notice to your employers to put you on the right tax code. If that's before March, it should sort itself out.
  • I haven't received any other payslips. Just my P45 which says my tax code is BR, total pay is £425 and total tax is £85. It was a temporary job for 4 weeks. What i want to know is should i be paying this tax or not? Its obviously fine if i'm meant to but i'll get it back if not :-)

M&S have now paid me correctly but had the wrong tax code.

Should i be calling M&S or the my local tax office now? (IF i'm not meant to pay this tax)
