HMRC headache

I need an outlet...

HMRC is causing me a major headache.

The left hand never seems to know what the right hand is doing.

Everytime you call up there is always one problem or another. They cannot tell you what the problem is 'for security reasons' and you always run around in circles interminably.

Operating one NI number for me when I've written countless letters giving my correct NI number - only just found out that it may be one of the security questions I may have 'failed'. To discover this now after sooooooo long. God knows what else is wrong, will I ever be able to sort my stuff out?

I am now regretting getting involved with Self Assessment and Tax returns.....

Forget about calling their call centres. You need to write to them to sort out this kind of problems.
  • Thanks Pennywise, I've written 3 letters in the last few months. I got a reply in December and thought all was right with the world till I phoned up today and found out that they
don't appear to take cognisance of details in letters.

Oh well, I'll have to write another letter tackling the NI number issue.

I don't suppose I can arrange a meeting to thrash everything out once and for all. Do they do meetings/interviews?

  • And another thing....

If the only reason you're filing a Tax Return is because of income from Let property why on earth do you have to fill in anything else?

Why can't I just submit a return based on income/expenditure from property and not have to fill out every little detail such as interest earned from bank accounts? It's already taxed so why on earth will they cause me pain having to rummage and calculate and add up the paltry interest that these silly banks pay anyway??

I hope the pain of this ends soon, I wish I hadn't bothered.

would be good if you only needed to advise them only your property details - but when working out someones tax liablity the whole income has to be taken into account as there are so many other things that can affect it - ie liability to higher rates etc. The revenue has changed over the years - call centers are just that - they have strict security processes - and they are limited to what they can do over the phone - if they cant deal with they will likley ask you to write in - i think if you insist you could probably ask for someone to call you back if you felt it would help - a lot of towns still have tax enquiriy offices where you can go in and see someone face to face - you should look in your phone book there might be one nearby - in the olden days when we called the tax office we had a point of contact with someone who knew our tax affairs and could deal with most aspects - now it has all changed. Local enquiry office might be your best option if there is one nearby -
