12 year old daughter - birthday party?!!!!!

  • Great ideas everyone so far.....
Have done similar parties for my daughters, and things always take longer than you think too, to fill the evening. I decorated my daughter's room with the tube lights( sort you have outside at xmas- bet there are xmas light bargains around at moment). They made pizza's and icecream sundaes. Then spent ages playing Twister- once food had gone down!!! Also painting nails takes ages, esp if you have some nail gems( cheap) to add. My friend is a hairdresser so she came to do the girls hair( curls/straighteners), so they were all occupied doing different things.
My younger daughter had her 7th birthday last Nov and we had a great time making things as I'd bought fairly cheapo bits for them to make and colour from Baker Ross( online) and they then took these home as their party bags!!:D
Also can't beat a homemade choc sponge cake for a birthday cake.
If you have a wii, or could borrow one -they could play bowling on that?

PS ALDI popcorn is cheap and great...we smuggle it to the cinema now!!!

Had my daughters 13th birthday party in November and she wanted 6 friends to go to an underage nightclub night. They did that and i suggest you go ahead with the bowling, but instead of doing the whole expensive feeding them out afterwards they were all quite happy to come back to our house, and eat dips, and party food with wineglasses full of BOGOF Shloer- all they want to do is talk and gossip anyway and upload billions of photos of the night on the computer:rolleyes:. I'm sure your daughter and her friends will be just as happy with that too.
Good luck with the 8 girls sleeping over- I drew the line at that, our house is way too small to be able to escape the all night giggles and MSN:rotfl:

    Hi Lillibet dripping

Why dont you ditch the bowling and get them to bring round nail varnishes, make up etc and get them to do make overs on each other just as people suggested, also do the pizza making and ice-cream factory - thats a really good idea then get a dvd and they can sit and watch that whilst eating their pizza and drinking their cocktails. They'll have a better laugh and you'll save a fortune! xx

I would opt for the bowling followed by food (& sleepover) at home. If you have 2/3 possible venues, compare their prices and work out whether it's best to take a party option or not.

Either homemade pizzas where they choose their own toppings, or cheap ones from the likes of Aldi (less than £1 each) or Tesco value pizzas with added cheese and toppings would go down well and kill time. We did a chocolate fountain for DD1's birthday last year. I would have lent it to you if we lived closer, sorry.

You can then get cheap and very funky make up in Primark which would probably go down well. The girls could even see what colours suit them best. Colourful (blue/green/purple) glittery eye liners and co-ordinating eye shadow, mascara and nail polish. Wilko's has manicure sets, cotton make up pads, skin cleansing stuff etc all for 50p-£1 each.

I would either forgo party bags or keep them simple, along the face mask or candle and some sweets, beautifully wrapped in clear cellophane and ribbon. Or pick up something suitable girly and incredibly cheap in the likes of Primark, with the benefit of the current sales. You could put something lovely together for less than a £1/head I'm sure.

Oh and for cheap party snacks, including fizzy drinks, check out www.approvedfood.co.uk

    Have fun! :)

ETA - Sorry got your post mixed with 9yr old Pamper party and now realise you didn't even mention party bags! :) Was wondering if you still have them at 12?
  • Hi Lunar Eclipse!

Oh, yes indeed you do still have party bags at 12 years old - just a lot more sophisticated than a tub of bubbles, a balloon, a pencil sharpener and a piece of cake!!

Will probably go with free samples or trial size make up items - plus. of course, the cake - HOMEMADE!!!!

    Thanks for your suggestions

  • Hi Lillibet - saw your thread and have asked my 'expert' (12yr old DD) what she and her mates liked about all of the parties they have been to in the last few months.;)
They've been and done some amazing things but the ones where they've had the most fun is when they've had extended time together, watched a film and done the 'girly' stuff that they are fairly new at.

She said that as they rarely get together outside school, it was nice for them to teach each other what they know about nails, electric blue (lol) eyeshadow and hair.:D Judging by the results, not much!:rotfl:

In fact, just what they'd had at our house (She is honest so isn't just being polite about what we'd done for her). We did plates of nibbles, chocolate fountain - which they loved trying out daft things in - apparently chips in choc was voted the fave   .
I had found an illuminated drinks fountain in Tesco (reduced to £5) so made them a cocktail and called it something daft so they felt rather sophisticated. They then stayed over so drank the stuff all night. It was a bottle of cream soda, lemonade and tropical fruit juice to make it pink!

The overall cost to us was minimal - pizza, chips, crisps and bits for the chocolate fountain. The 'party bags' were a pink feather boa and glitter stetson - not my plan but were cheap in a party shop sale - the girls still have the boas and hats in their rooms - if the webcams are anything to go by.

i have a 13 year old daughter , id be honest and tell her that you cant afford it if you cant , i have two adult children too and have always been honest with them if money was a issue , i think they have to learn you cant always have what you want !
if you think you have to do it incase she goes to live with her dad she will just play one against the other
my kids lost there dad at xmas and it makes me want to spoil them so much , was letting a lot go with my daughter , she got realy gobby and quite selfish
so we had a chat !
best to be honest with them i think
