Cutting mount board for picture framing

Hi guys/gals,

I'm currently framing some pictures and in true MSE style, would like to cut the mount board myself rather than buying he expensive pre cut ones.

Does anyone have any experience of using these cutting tools (eg http://www.artifolk.co.uk/catalog/products/cutting_and_sticking/olfa_mount_board_cutter_mc-452b.htm?r=froogle) are they worth the £? I would also like the option of cutting round holes also at 45 degrees - which this one cant do.

I only have 25 or so pictures I want to frame just now so don't want to spend too much.

Any ideas?

Thanks

  • I've cut mount board to frame cross stitched items before but the ideas the same for photos.

I used a really sharp craft knife, one with a new blade is always best, and a metal ruler. Measure out the size of the aperture and lightly mark with a pencil. (Remember measure twice, cut once!) When you come to do the cut angle the blade of the knife at a 45 degree angle and that gives the sloping sides around the photo like you see on shop-bought mounts IYSWIM. It was a professional picture framer that showed me how to do it.

Cutting perfect circles might be a bit more difficult.

I buy huge sheets of mountboard from Hobbycraft for around £2.65.

    Hope this helps

Decluttering, home-making and 'proper' cooking are my priorities this year and trying to finish all those unfinished hobby projects before spending any more money!
