My decent tin opener died early in 2008 after many years service, since then I have THREE replacements which have all failed, OK I might expect a 99p one not to last long but I also had two more expensive ones and they have just packed up after a few weeks.
Tonights failure is an Easican bought in Morrisons I'm sure it was £4 or £5 . It took me about 15 minutes of struggling to half open a tin of soup for DH (unwell) ..he didn't get the lumps as I couldn't get the top off enough!!
Could putting them in the dishwasher be harming them? I've heard tin openers are a source of food poisioning though.
So what can I buy that will last me a few years ??

I have a cheap old style tin opener. I've had it for years and years and it's still going strong.0

Married 25 years next year. Over first few years had every type of can opener ranging from on the wall types to anything new. They all let me down. So for the past 15 years or more I use the old 60s type where you push it into the can then the up and down movement to open it, dont know anyone else who uses one but it works for us0

I have one that I was given by my mother in 1976. It's the old type with just a blade you bash into the tin then lever round. It was given when we got our first house, back in those days when you got your first home friends and family looked round their homes and gave you stuff they could spare to help you out. And you were damn grateful!!!
Since then I/we have had many different types of of tin opener, but always got back to that one. It's the most reliable tin opener in the world.0 -
Thanks all.
I remember my mum having one of those blade ones that you use to cut the lid out. I never seemed to get the hang of it. I've had various of those ones where you clip it on and turn a butterfly but they just don't seem to cut after a few months.
Can you clean an electric tin opener properly ?

Yes you can the blade removes easily to wash then just shake it dry and put it back on.0

I've got one that's been going strong for many years. It's along the lines of the Good Grips range, ie traditional function but big chunky handles that give you a bit more power. Mine have been in the dishwasher a fair few times and are showing a bit of wear but I reckon some years' life left in them.0

My mum has been married 27 years and still has the butterfly tin opener she was given as part of a wedding present. When I set up on my own I bought one too, and that's been going 5 years
Perhaps a decent quality mechanical one from somewhere like Layland may last better, particularly if you're putting it through the dishwasher?
I have a fear of the "up and down" type as I've had several accidents with them over the years in holiday accommodation, I stabbed myself in the fleshy base of my thumb, and then my OH cut himself on the jagged edge. That said, many folks use them for years happily.

We've been married for 20 years and had our flat for 2 before this so that makes my old brabantia hand can opener 23 years old this year :rotfl: :T
My mum and dad bought us a fancy battery operated one for xmas which I haven't fathomed how to use yet  ...0 -
I had the same trouble with various butterfly openers prices from 99p to £8 - they were all useless! I bought a couple from an ebay shop last autumn and they are brilliant, really firm grip and easy to wash. If anyone wants the shop name I'll find it out.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!
