Recipe help - orange surprise?

Options
Can anyone help please?

When I did Home Ec at school (about 16 years ago now!) we made this dessert called Orange Surprise. You mixed all the ingredients together and poured them into the dish, but when it had baked - it separated into a top layer of sponge and bottom layer of cream, the consistency of lemon curd.

I wish I had kept the recipes (I burnt them all  ) as I'd love to make this again.

By the way, it once genuinely was "orange surprise" - the surprise being I had forgotten the orange :wall:

  • There's a recipe called Impossible Pie which you might be able to adapt for orange surprise???

    It appears to sound similar,
I must admit I'd never heard of it

I expect it's the same as Lemon Surprise (Delia's)

    2oz butter (50g)
    4oz caster sugar (110g)
rind and juice of 2 large lemons
    2 eggs, SEPARATED
    2oz SR flour (50g), sifted
    5fl oz milk (150ml)

    Pre-heat oven to gas mark 4, 350 degrees F (180 degrees C)
Whisk egg whites until white and "peaky"
Beat butter, sugar and lemon rind until soft.
Beat in egg yolks, a little at a time.
Fold in flour alternately with milk and lemon juice.
    Fold in whisked egg whites
Pour into 1 1/2 pt, deep, buttered baking dish
Bake in centre of oven for 40-45 mins until golden brown

(I usually do it in a bain marie for some reason)
TIP - If you use an electric mixer it's important to whisk the egg whites first. If you make the lemon mixture first, you have to wash and dry the beaters before you can use them to whisk egg whites
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

Thanks - never sure when in new forums - I know I should read the FAQ & etc. but there was so much here to look at that was more interesting :)
  • There is a chocolate version too. Example here. I have made a recipe like this and it is lovely.

If you Google, there is a microwave version too.

    Regards,

I've been making lemon surprise pudding for years. The results do seem to vary every time I make it - sometimes there's a lot of the 'surprise' at the bottom of the bowl, sometimes it's virtually all fluffy sponge. I think it might have something to do with the size of the eggs and lemons. Anyway, if you're not entirely happy with your first attempt, try again as you'll probably have much better luck the next time.
