Toothache, can't afford more work!

Hello

Due to a lot of neglect on my part when growing up, I have had a lot of work done and spent thousands on my teeth going privately when I could afford it. Luckily for me I now have an NHS dentist but they have a good 2 month wait for an appointment (unless emergency) and they are quite distance from me.

Around 6 weeks ago I had toothache in a lower molar which has previously been root filled and I believe to my recollection that the root was removed. An xray and examination showed no cavities or infection but the dentist gave me a prescription for penicillin which did the trick and no more pain was felt until last night when I couldn't sleep for toothache and again today it is throbbing constantly.

I am extremely tight financially and really can't afford to go again, I can't even afford another prescription at the moment as all I have is petrol money until payday.

I know there are a couple of dentists who are good enough to offer advice on here and wondered whether they had any thoughts on this please?

With many thanks
MWA

Though they can give advice, they cant do anything for you over the internet. Maybe go to the chemist and see what painkillers they can recommened. Ring your dentist and make a appointment anyway for after you've been paid. Or maybe someone could lend you some money to pay for your treatment and you could pay them back when you get paid?

Do you have a dental hospital near you? I was in yur situatio a few years ago with a wisdom tooth that suddenly started giving me a LOT of grief, I woke up crying in the night it was that bad, and i was taking more painkillers than the packet said etc.

I went to the dental hospital and they pulled it for free, as an emergency, BUT I got a hell of a lot of grief from the student dentist over it ( why cant you afford to pay and go private) I simply said that one day she would realise not everyone is as loaded as dentists seem to be ;)
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

No it doesn't, and it can cause chemical burns.

You need to see a dentist mwa, and get something more concrete than a prescription.

Pills don't cure toothache, they just put it off for a few days/weeks.

You will need the tooth re-root filling or extracting.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

    Thankyou for all your responses.

Toothsmith - I have had this root filling taken out and replaced twice since it was originally done about 5 years ago (by different dentists) one dentist said it was getting damaged by the tooth above which has since been filed down but the filling that's troubling me feels very shallow compared to the same one on the other side if that makes sense, I'm wondering if it's more of a physiological thing if that's possible? I don't want an extracaction as it is very visible, being tooth number 4, I believe.

Have taken painkillers and will make an appointment, I know it's all I can do.

    Thanks again

If you have an infection it may be worth trying hot salty water. this is what a lot of dentists advise when you have wisdom tooth pain and infection. If you are desperate tyring seeing your GP if you require antibiotics to clean the infection but you will need to see a dentist to deal with the cause of this problem and resole it once and for all

I would disagree with all of the above.

Why would they give you grief?
What do they do at the dental hospital:rolleyes:
  • I put off going to the dentist with a similar complaint because I was so busy at work, ended up with a face blowing abcess, losing 2 teeth and was off work for over a week. One year later it has still not healed properly. Ask your dentist if you can pay up later or give a post dated cheque.
