New Job after JSA

Hi Guys, I wonder if anyone could advise me. I have just found work after 2 yrs! Yippee. I have been on JSA for that period of time. My tax code is 603L, is it possible I would qualify for a tax rebate? and am I right in assuming I will not get taxed until I earn £6030? Basic questions I know, but not being up in these things I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks

That depends on how much you will earn this year including JSA and whatever you will get in your job.

Depends on how you look at it.

Each month you will get 1/12th of your tax-free allowances - i.e. just under £503. As we are now in the 10th month of the tax year that would be £5030 of your tax-free allowances. Depending on how much JSA you got you will have used up part or all of that amount.

Start work on Jan 5th, signed off JSA in October and used £1394 tax from JSA. Salary £20k. Does this help?
Thanks for your good wishes Annie

Not sure what you mean by this. Did you receive £1394 in income from JSA or was that the amount of tax you paid?
  • So long as you hand in your JSA P45 and your new employer uses it, you probably won't pay any tax before about March

The tax paid without knowing the actaul income paid doesn't help.
  • If you were only on JSA from April to Oct, it's extremely unlikely that you would have paid any tax, the £1394 is more likely to be taxable JSA

Thanks sweetietot. It is taxable JSA. Do you think there may be possible tax rebate when I get my first salary payment?

if you have paid no tax then you can't get a tax refund
