stain on fire hearth - will it ever come off?

At halloween we always have our pumpkins displayed on our hearth which is made from black marble ( or thats what it looks like) when I came to move them one of them had gone pretty rank and was all furry inside. I cleaned all the firplace down but had noticed that it seemed damaged. I covered it with candles and then xmas ornaments but think oh is getting sucpious any body any idea's I could use to get it back to being shiny already tried olive oil, baby oil and almond all to no effect. :mad:
