geekgirl, do you know what becomes of the packaging?

I've often wondered this too. Yes its a good idea of supermarkets on the face of it, a way of customers saying, this is what I managed to remove as excess packaging from your products and still get it home without making a mess in my hessian recycled/reusable bag, walking/cycling because it's better for the environment and good excercise... but do they dispose of it as responsibly as we might?
  • Organic stuff comes wrapped in plastic yet some non organic stuff is unwrapped. If the problem was shelf life then surely they would wrap everything in plastic. Time the wrapping law was strengthened particularly for fresh fruit and vegetables. Markets, grocers and farm shops get by without wrapping fruit and vegetables what makes supermarkets unreliable?

What bugs me is that some packaging is bio-degradable- usually the organic stuff but the regular veg is packaged in plastic! If it can be done why not roll it out on all lines?
In my view its just another marketing tactic to draw in consiencious consumers- a fight back at the popularity of veg box schemes and farmers markets.
The big supermarkets just dont care!

It's all about the money. Supermarkets sell organic produce and biodegradable packaging because there is a market for it; it's more expensive for them to use so they won't roll it out until they are forced by the UN.
