what would you do?

Hello everyone

I have a lil dilema, my aunt knows a photographer and he is a bit of a family friend, although i do not know him very well - i didnt want to ask him to be our photographer as i thought he would feel wierd 'working' while at our wedding with our family (he dated a relative, who wont be coming to the wedding though!) so we booked another one.

Tonight my aunt asked me why we didnt book him, and said he would do it for us for a massive discount. He is already cheaper than our current photographer anyway and i have seen all his work and its gorgeous. BUT we have already paid £400 for our deposit.
So we either lose the £400 but save in what we spend on the photography, or stick with our original photographer?

Personally, I wouldn't want to lose the £400!

Could you perhaps compromise, if funds permit, and ask your aunt's friend to do some reportage style photos while your other one does the more formal ones? Perhaps if you invite him to the wedding, he might do it as a favour, rather than as a 'job'?

I also don't know if you've signed a contract with the first one - I know we have with ours - and you might be held to pay him the balance, depending on the t&cs if you cancel??

just tell her the truth, she may think your a ninny for paying out the extra but will understand your motive, i dare say she will be touched that the thought was of his feelings rather than saving money, why not invite him to your evening do as a guest, i dare say he will prob bring his camara with him....have a fantastic wedding day!! x

Personally, I would stick with the photographer that you have booked - you obviously like his portfolio. Would you really want to lose £400? Stick to your guns.

Although I know you'll be reluctant to lose £400, I wouldn't factor this into your decision. It's a sunk cost - it's already committed, and which ever way you go you've paid it. Spoken like a true accountant! If you're making the decision on a financial basis you need to base it on the future costs that would differ under the two options.

So, you need to weigh up what the outstanding balance is that you would have to pay the photographer you've booked, and how much the family friend would charge. If the family friend is less, then you would be saving, regardless of the £400.

But more importantly, whose work do you prefer? Remember you'll be looking at your photos for years to come so it's important that you feel you have a photographer who you think will get the photos and the style that you want.
