It looked to me like for some those things, buying ingredients would be cheaper than buying the economy product.

    Eg:
128g pack of batter mix (which needs eggs added to it) for 8p

Economy plain flour is usually 43p for 1.5kilos, so that's 3.84p per 128g.

Half of the stuff (well more than half really) not available to me as we only have Tesco, Coop and Lidl, and local stores. Would not touch a lot of the stuff if you paid me to buy it anyway! Much better buying quality cheaper cuts of meat, lots of veg (buy in season and its cheaper), cheap flour/tinned toms etc from Lidl.

  • why don't you bulk buy frozen vegetables and then it works out as cheap if you are to think of it as a daily portion etc?

I agree frozen veg is a good idea, although certain veg just doesn't taste the same to me when its been frozen (eg sprouts). Things like peas, carrots, sweetcorn, corn cobs broad beans etc freeze well though. Great idea for small portions or something only one person likes. I sometimes get peppers cheap and freeze in slices, same for mushrooms etc. They freeze fine.
