UPVC Conservatory Door Won't Lock

Our conservatory door won't lock, this has just started earlier today. With the key in and the door open the locking mechanism works fine, however when we shut the door the lock simply won't turn. This has only just happened today, so I am wondering if the freezing temparatures might have an effect on the UPVC structure? Has anyone got any suggestions of action I could take?

Does the handle push up OK when the door is shut? What I found with ours that sometimes the locking mechinism would not locate properly and trying it a few times would work.

You'll probably find that the position of the lock on the door relative to the lockstay on the frame has moved slightly. This happens to us regularly with our uPVC front door - particularly when we have a cold spell. I usually loosen the screws of the lockstay and move it around until it's in a better position. If you can't adjust the lockstay then you'll have to adjust the hinges (usually using a small allen key).

    Hope that helps

Just for tonight as a temporary thing remove the lockstay from the frame altogether, when this is taken off its as if you have a bigger hole for the bolt to go into.
Obviously it's not going to be as strong or secure as when you have the metal on the frame. But considering it's late and cold it will be quicker than trying to adjust the hinges, and will do for a day or two.

  • does the mechanism lock while the door is in the open position.are the door gaps parralell across the top ie is it in line with the frame.if the door is not in line with the top of the frame then it will need toe and heeling or adjustment of the hinges .sometimes the upvc shrinks and the gap becomes to wide for lock to operate if this has happened the hinges want altering as suggested flag hinges with alllen key and butt hinges with screw driver
