I was just looking at this one, according to the girl in the shop its really good, (she didn't seem to know what she was talking about so I asked for a second opinion and they agree)

its slightly cheaper through Ebuyer at £62.20 inc VAT. Will be ordering mine later, unless someone posts a cheaper one :D

Netgear. I have installed many of these and never had a problem. It includes a built in hardware firewall and modem.

You'll need micro filters on any standard phones you have plugged in around the house... think you get one in the box with the Netgear device. They're available for a couple of quid each on Ebay.

Security, well you have a built in firewall on the Netgear and a software firewall is probably a good idea as well... try the Zonelabs one which is available as a free download. You should also be running AV software on your PC and keep it regularly updated.... there's a free download of AV software, but I forget the link now (have a look on the technical board). Free anti spyware tools such as CounterSpy, AdAware, Spybot etc etc are a good idea too...
...Oh, and there's rootkit detectors too, but probably best not to complicate matters too much at this stage!

    Good luck

  • when I was still on ADSL I used a Netgear which was very user friendly and reliable.

Might be worth looking into Linksys too..we use that now for our cable and it's very good...can handle both b and g at the same time without impacting the g's speed. (B is only 11MBps and G is 54MBps just incase you are unfamiliar)

Security wise having a router is a good start it means your PC does not have an external IP address which makes it damned hard for someone to get in. I just run AVG to keep free of viruses (particularly those nasty ones designed for outlook...grrr) on top of it.

As to the wireless...make sure it has encryption built in...basically you then choose a string of numbers that acts as a key to the network. You would be amazed how many people don't have this or don't turn it on!!

P.S as to buying it I would go to an online store like ebuyer, scan or overclockers

  • Netgear have a bit of a reputation for dropped connections & poor reliability on their routers. There are discussions on here about how to it and if you search there are a few forums around discussing this issue and how to fix it.
