This Bungalow Is Unsuitable If You Have Arthritis?

My brother and sister-in-law are going to view a bungalow next week and she's always to my mind been extravagant and rules the roost where my brother is concerned. This bungalow is totally unsuited to their needs - their grandkids are grown up let alone the kids - and my brother can't climb stairs due to arthritis.
Does anyone know if a chair lift could be adapted to this kind of staircase?
My SIL showed me the pics of the bungalow and I pointed out to here that the staircase would not accommodate a chair lift but she insists it will do. I can't see it myself and I think they should buy a proper bungalow with no stairs and also somewhere near the coast.
My SIL is a right old snob and has always wanted what she wants but I think this time she is being extremely mean as far as bruv is concerned.

<off topic>How is it a bungalow if it has stairs?</OT>
Could you check out a couple of providers of stair-lifts and find out the measurements? Perhaps if you show her the brochure and she hears from the 'experts' she'll see sense. Get them to take a measuring tape when they go!0 -
No sure I've ever seen a million quid bungallow before.
I'm no expert but the stairs look narrow and of less than ideal design and construction to fit a starilift. But if there is a profit it in it for them I'm sure they'd find a way.
You don't seem to get much for your money in that part of the country.0 -
So no bias there then.breadlinebetty wrote: »My SIL is a right old snob and has always wanted what she wants

But I do hope you all sort it out.Been away for a while.0 -
This bungalow doesn't sound like a bungalow if it has stairs?! Suggest they choose one without this added attraction. The whole idea is to be on same leve surely! This property has obviously been extended up into the attic, and is not suitable to their needs.
You can only advise, but I can see your dilemma with concerns about your brother. Chair lifts are expensive, can break down, and why go through all that hassle when a bedroom could be on ground level in the right property!

Does your brother need access to the section of the bungalow that is up the stairs (a mezzanine I think with library / study)? If not, then would not havinga stair lift be a problem? Where do they live now? Do they want to live near the coast, or is that your preference?
Personally, I can't see how a stairlift would fit those stairs, but I'm sure that they could be adapted to make one fit. At the end of the day, it is their decision and if your brother is happy to go along with it, there is little anyone else can do. Hope it works out for them.0 -
Have you actually read the description?? The stairs head to a mezzanine library/study and the loft access.
If your brother and SiL are happy with this bungalow it really isn't any of your business.
I hope they'll be very happy there, it's a lovely home, are you jealous by chance?Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
mmmmm is this someone just trying to get their property looked at???
Kinda stupid if it is as this forum is about "money saving" so buying a million pound bungalow is a little silly in a HPCIf you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -
Stairs and mezanine floor is easily removed. If they are able to pay 950k for a bungalow I am sure they can afford to pay for some alterations if that's the place they like.

Note as it is your first post no doubt it is a p1ss take, if you are on the breadline as in your user name tap them up for a few quid and point them in the direction of a 500k place. I smell a rat..I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left. :rolleyes:0 -
Just asked OH as he's a lift engineer (for both commercial lists and stairlifts) and he said you it could have a stairlift installed but it would cost a bloody bomb.
The alternatives are a through the floor lift, of if the staircase was changed and instead of it being spiral, it was just straight up level against the wall, it would be easier and cheaper to have a stairlift installed.
It's a bloody gorgeous home though!

I think this is a wind up too.
If someone tried to tell me what sort of house to live in and where I would not take it at all well (to put it mildly).0
