can i transfer name on deeds without changing joint mortgage

FYI I have just 'bought out' my ex on our fixed rate mortgage and still have the terms of the original - which is just as well as there would be no chance of me getting it should I have tried to do it on my own (at 4.5 times my income I'd seriously doubt it).
He wanted to buy a house for his new family so 'gifted' the liability to me - made it much easier as I didn't need a new product to make up the difference and the £160 fee from the bank for consent to transfer was just tacked on my existing product but at the variable rate.
When doing the paperwork there were questions asked about exchange of money between both parties for drawing up the agreement and I suppose it would entirely depend on how you would finance that as to wether you would need a new mortgage or not. But if it is merely a case of taking a name off and keeping an existing mortgage you wouldn't have been able to get on your own then it is certainly possible...The only computer error is a human one.0
